Creating a Legacy of Opportunity

J.C. and Kathy Harville

"To say that Cumberlands made an impact on my life is beyond words. I became a teacher, district office person, and finished my career as a principal for the last 10 years. I owe my career to those people who invested in me."
—J. C. Harville ’79

J. C. Harville ’79 was the first in his family to attend college. He was determined to make the most of his life, despite obstacles he faced at a young age.

Mr. Harville was excited and anxious to begin his college experience by enrolling in Cumberlands in 1976. Right away, he became involved in the Baptist Student Union, worked part-time in the office of the campus minister, and met his future wife, Kathy ’79. Things were going good!

His life changed forever on Dec. 1, 1976, when he received news of the sudden and tragic death of his mother. While packing to leave campus to be with his father, President James Boswell came to his dorm room to pray with him. Dr. Boswell guaranteed Mr. Harville that he would be able to finish college and that he would do all he could to see him through.

Mr. Harville returned to Cumberlands because he felt he had the support of his professors, college friends, the campus minister, and most importantly, Dr. Boswell. The loss of his mother had upended his personal life, and he soon found he had no money for tuition, no job, and no place to go home to. He went to Dr. Boswell and explained his situation, and was assured he could continue his studies at Cumberlands. He was given the opportunity to work summers to earn money and received scholarship awards that would see him through to his graduation in May 1979.

A lifelong investor in Cumberlands students, Mr. Harville also plans a legacy gift as his perpetual gift to students just like him.
