A Powerful Family Legacy

Roger Powers, '80, and Jonathan Powers, '84, have a strong connection with University of the Cumberlands. Both were raised in Williamsburg, are licensed pharmacists, and the owners of Maiden Drug Company. Roger and Jonathan are not the only alumni from their family. All the children of Pairon and Joyce Powers attended Cumberlands, as well as several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

In 2005, Roger and Jonathan established a scholarship fund because they were eager to do something meaningful for their alma mater. The fund was renamed the Deborah Carol Childress Memorial Scholarship Fund in 2007, in memory of their niece who wanted to be a teacher but tragically lost her life in an automobile accident. The fund awards two annual scholarships of $1,000 each to deserving high school graduates from Williamsburg Independent and Whitley County High School, who intend to enroll at Cumberlands and major in education.

All of the Powers siblings live, work, and serve in the Whitley County area and most are passionate about the mission of University of the Cumberlands. It is not uncommon to see one or more of the family members on campus at any given time, whether it be a ball game or other special event.

Since 2005, the Powers brothers have made a tremendous impact on the lives of local students pursuing education through the Memorial Scholarship Fund. Annual contributions to the fund are received and provide much-needed assistance to two future educators. The Powers family has truly honored the life and memory of their loved one!
