A Commitment of a Scholarship Is Life-Changing

Meet Grace and Samantha, sisters pursuing their dreams of distinctive education at University of the Cumberlands—thanks to generous benefactors who have influence in the lives and futures of students.

The sisters (two of 13 siblings) grew up in Blackey, Kentucky, a rural coal mining community deep in the mountains. Grace and Samantha were raised in a close-knit, hardworking, and personable community. Their parents encouraged their children to express themselves individually while pursuing education. Grace is majoring in music with a minor in psychology, while Samantha is studying music. Both are members of the Patriots Marching Band.

Grace has worked hard academically and will complete her degree in December after only 3½ years at University of the Cumberlands. She plans to pursue graduate courses and desires to become a cruise ship pianist—allowing her to travel while continuing her passion.

Samantha is a sophomore and loves making new friends and attending campus events. She hopes to share her love of music and record background tracks in studios.

“While we have similarities and spend time together, there is a definite place here for both our passions and personalities at the University,” explains Grace.

Both ladies have work-study jobs and receive scholarships, made possible by the generosity of donors who have a deep love and regard for University of the Cumberlands. The future is much brighter now for Grace and Samantha because of donor support.

The Cumberlands Commitment provides affordable, quality education to students from Appalachia and beyond.

These students are grateful for those who care enough to invest in and open doors for students like them.
